Will I have to do my student's laundry? Here are some basic guidelines for host families regarding laundry.

Updated over a week ago

As a host family, you are not required to do all your student's laundry. Of course, you are welcome to offer, if you prefer.

Here are some tips for navigating laundry with your international student:

  • Please give your student access to the host family washer and dryer, let them know how it works and how to operate it.

  • You may prefer to wash your student's laundry with your own, but some students prefer to to wash their own loads. As always, communication is key.

  • Hosts should allow their students to wash their personal laundry at least once a week.

    • You might want to let your student know that Americans try to conserve energy, so single items should not be washed and it's important not wash laundry on a daily basis.

💡Tip: Talk with your student to set up a laundry schedule! This way, your student always knows what day/time is best for them to wash their clothing each week. You can also add this information to your home calendar if you have one.

  • If your students need to wash items by hand and want to hang them to dry, please show them an appropriate place to hang these items.
