Getting Your Background Check with Sterling Volunteers

The Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET) requires all host families to undergo an annual background check to ensure their safety, as well as the safety of everyone involved in the program and community.

πŸ’‘ Note: This step is part of our host family application and vetting process. You will be guided to the step via email after your initial host family application has been approved. βœ“

Your next step as a host family is to submit an application for a background check for each member of your household who would be 18 years of age or older while residing in the home with a student.

To do so, each individual 18 years of age or older will register a free account online with Sterling Volunteers. Each of you will then be able to order your individual background check in just 4 easy steps (the process takes less than 5 minutes!).

  • Please click on Background Check Sterling Volunteers to start the process: https://app.sterlingvolunteers.com/en/Candidates/Account/Register

  • Please forward this link to all household members over age 18. Each person will need to login and create a free account.

  • Please note that for each host family member in which a criminal background check is required, a $20 fee will be deducted from the first host stipend payment to cover the cost.

If you have any technical questions about the background check steps, please contact Sterling Volunteers' Customer Care team by email: theadvocates@sterlingvolunteers.com or call: 1-855-326-1860 option 1
