How long do students stay?

We have short and long-term opportunities available for host families. You will always know how long your student is staying before you agree to host them.

Length of stay varies per student, depending on their academic plans. Homestay placements range from 3 weeks to 3 years.

💡FYI: The host family application and vetting process is the same for short-term and long-term placements.

We will make sure you understand and approve of the student's timeline before we present you as their host family match.

Long-Term Hosting Opportunities

Most high school students need a host family for a full academic school year (9-10 months/approximately 42 weeks). This would be considered a long-term hosting opportunity.

  • Long-term placements give you the chance to connect deeply with your international student and make them feel like part of the family.

  • The memories and friendships formed during long-term homestay placements are especially impactful.

  • Students will have the chance to get comfortable in your community by learning their way around, making friends, getting involved in sports, etc.

  • Most students remain friends with their host families long after they've returned to their home country.

  • Long-term placements typically start in the fall (at the beginning of the academic year).

Short-Term Hosting Opportunities

Any homestay placement that is less than 6 months long is considered a short-term hosting opportunity. In these scenarios, international students are usually involved in a summer camp, internship program or English language program.

💡Tip: Short-term placements are great for first-time host families who are interested in hosting and would like to give it a try.

  • Short-term hosting opportunities can take place at any time during the year.

  • Many in short-term placements are over the age of 18.

  • Most short-term students are studying abroad as part of a group.

  • Short-term students enjoy a full and exciting schedule, participating in their program and fun activities that may have been scheduled ahead of time.

  • You will need to be fully registered as a StudentRoomStay host family in order to be offered homestay placements for short-term students.
